Is your basement rotting your brain?

If you've got a leak in the basement, get it fixed before you start growing your own mushroom forest down there -- because any amount of fungal growth or mold exposure could wreck your health.

I'm sure you've already heard what mold and funguses can do to your allergies, especially if these growths are hidden in and around your home (and maybe you've experienced it firsthand).

(You'll be shocked to learn what one of the most common sources of fungal and mold exposure in your home is. Click here for the disturbing answer.)

But new research finds a risk that's worse -- much worse, because fungal growths and mold exposure in your home may have the power to shut down the genes responsible for the release of dopamine in the brain.

And that, in turn, could lead to one of the most devastating degenerative conditions of all: Parkinson's disease.

The new study was on fruit flies, and when exposed to the mushroom alcohol vapors released by mold they showed the movement problems that are a hallmark of Parkinson's.

Of course, an experiment on fruit flies doesn't mean the same thing would happen to humans -- and we don't know if it's even possible to inhale enough mushroom vapors to damage genes in the larger and more complex human brain.

But mildew, fungus and mold exposure can hurt you in so many other ways. In fact, I've found that fungal infections are a major source of illness, especially chronic illness.

And it's one your own doctor almost certainly never looks for.

Don't be too hard on him; he doesn't even know how or where to look. They don't exactly spend much time on fungal infections in medical schools these days. Even many natural health doctors don't know enough about diagnosing and treating these infections.

But if you're battling an illness your doctor is having a hard time treating -- one he can't even identify with any degree of certainty -- then seek the help of a holistic physician experienced in detecting and treating fungal infections.

If you're in Southern California, treatment for fungal infections is one of my specialties. Contact my clinic for more information or to make an appointment.

Not in the area? I can still help -- I'm available for telephone consultations, and I can tell you what questions you should ask your own doctor and what tests you should demand.
