Daily Sugar intake linked to brain diseases

Looks like soda is as bad for the brain as it is for the belly.

Sugar -- in the amounts of sugar found in soda -- can alter proteins in the brain, specifically some of the proteins that play a role in major brain diseases such as Alzheimer's, according to a new study on rats testing the effects of daily sugar intake.

In the study, researchers compared the brains of two sets of rats. One was given normal water, while the other was given water with 10 percent sugar.

Not coincidentally, that's the same amount of sugar found in most soft drinks.

After 26 days, the rats on the sugar water had changes in 290 of 1,373 proteins found by the researchers -- and a third of those proteins are involved in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and schizophrenia.

What makes this so alarming is that these changes were found in the brains even after the rats had stopped the daily sugar intake and put onto plain old water for a week.

That's a sign the damage from a high daily sugar intake could be lasting... maybe even permanent.

It's true that these are rats and not humans. But it's also true that our brains have more than a few similarities on the most basic level -- and many of the things that can damage a rodent brain can also damage ours.

I think we can add sugar to that list.

Having said all that, there's more to brain health -- more to brain diseases -- than just sugar. And while daily sugar intake may contribute to conditions such as dementia or Parkinson's, it's almost certainly not the prime cause of them.

Medication, food sensitivities, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances and more can all lead to problems in the brain. And one of the biggest undiagnosed causes of brain problems is metals exposure.

If you're middle aged or older, odds are you have some potentially toxic metals building up inside your own brain, right now.

A holistic physician can test you for exposure and then work with you on a safe and natural detoxification program that will help slash your risk of diseases of the brain and slow or even reverse the damage if you're already suffering.
