Common condition boosts risk of colon polyps

A big belly could put your butt on the line in a very real way -- because obesity can raise your risk of potentially cancerous colon growths.

And not by a little bit, either.

If you're an overweight man, your risk of colon polyps triples when compared to normal-weight men -- and if you're obese, that risk triples again when compared to overweight men, according to the latest research.

And believe it or not, those are actually some of the best numbers in the study -- because it gets worse from here.

Much worse.

If you're obese, for example, your risk of having colorectal polyps (as opposed to none at all) jumps by 800 percent, while your risk of having three or more of these precancerous growths jumps by 650 percent.

What's more, the study looked at several different measures of obesity -- including BMI, body fat, fat hormones, waistline and more -- and found that any of them alone can increase your risk of polyps.

Colorectal polyps aren't cancers, but precancerous growths that could turn into tumors, especially if they get hold of something that can help them grow.

And as it turns out, they just love leptin.

That's the so-called fat hormone that rises in your body as your waistline expands -- and the higher your levels of leptin, the higher your risk of polyps.

While this study focused on men, obesity is a major risk factor for a number of cancers in men and woman alike -- so if you've packed on the pounds yourself over the years, it's time to get rid of them.

And no matter how much you weigh, if you're in your middle ages or older, it's important to get a colonoscopy.

It's not nearly as bad as it sounds, and it could save your life.
