Boost your brain, one sip at a time.

A drink that can enhance your brain, protect your memory and even make you smarter?

I know… that sounds like science fiction.

But plain old green tea can actually do just that, with new research showing how the health benefits of green tea boost the "effective connectivity" of your brain.

This is your internal wiring system, or the communications network that allows each part of your brain to communicate with the others. It's an essential function, critical to your overall cognitive function and especially the working memory you rely on throughout the day.

And in the new study, men given a drink spiked with green tea extract aced their memory tests when compared to men given a placebo drink.

This isn't some vague long-term benefit, either. In fact, MRIs revealed the effect is almost immediate, according to the study in the journal Psychopharmacology.

And that's not all the health benefits of green tea do for your brain.

Other studies have shown how a compound in green tea, epigallocatechin-3-gallate or EGCG, can break up the metal build-ups in the brain that form the plaques linked to dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

If that's all green tea did, I'd recommend brewing up a cup or two every day -- because breaking up those plaques is the key to making sure you never suffer from dementia.

But green tea can do so much more. It can protect your heart, prevent cancer and fight off major diseases. And if that's not enough, it can even help reduce your blood pressure and lower your cholesterol levels.

Just make sure you pass on the bottled stuff, which is loaded with preservatives, coloring agents and sweeteners. Many of them don't even contain the nutrients that make green tea such a healthy option.

Brew your own instead. Choose a quality tea from a maker you trust, and avoid anything grow in the contaminated soil of China.
