Hidden illness boosts cancer risk 15%

You don't have to be a diabetic to face many of the risks that come with diabetes.

Even slightly elevated blood sugar levels can increase your risk of chronic disease, including deadly conditions such as cancer.

For example, diabetics have a much higher risk of cancer in general than non-diabetics -- but new research confirms that this increased risk extends even to people with blood sugar levels that are elevated, but aren't quite at diabetic levels.

It's called pre-diabetes, and having it will increase your risk of many forms of cancer by 15 percent according to the new study in Diabetologia.

Specifically, pre-diabetes will boost your risk of cancers of the liver, stomach, pancreas, breast and endometrium, according to the analysis of 16 studies.

Certain cancers feed off sugars -- and when your body loses the ability to break down sugar, which is what happens as you develop insulin resistance, you could be giving tumor cells just the fuel they need.

These aren't the only risks that come along for the ride as your blood sugar levels rise. Chronically high blood sugar levels can increase your risk of cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer's disease -- and again, that's true even if you never develop diabetes.

Elevated blood sugar will also damage your heart, which is why pre-diabetes will up the odds of heart disease by 50 percent.

It can even increase your risk of stroke.

And of course, pre-diabetes often turns into real diabetes, with up to 30 percent of those with the condition getting the disease within 5 years.

The big problem, however, is that most people with pre-diabetes don't actually know it.

That's why it's important to get your blood sugar levels checked regularly as part of a comprehensive physical -- and if they start to creep upward, don't wait. Make the changes today that can prevent diabetes tomorrow, and also help reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke and more.
