Put the brakes on cell death with this ancient root extract
Is it REALLY going to be 2017 in just a few weeks?
Not long ago, that sounded like a year straight out of science fiction. Now, we're living in it (and still waiting for our jet-packs).
I can't do anything about the pages on your calendar. But I can do something about another sign of aging -- one you can't see, but is far more important.
Scientists may have uncovered one of the secrets to slowing or even stopping the aging process cold where it matters most: deep inside your body, inside your very DNA.
And amazingly, this cutting-edge study finds that the answer may be found in an herbal remedy that's been used since ancient times in India.
It's called ashwagandha, and it plays a key role in the Ayurvedic medical tradition.
Clearly, those folks knew what they were doing way back when, because this new study finds ashwagandha might have the power to protect your telomeres.
Telomeres are like little caps that sit on the ends of each DNA strand. Every time the cell divides, the telomere shrinks just a little -- and when it shrinks too much, the cell dies.
When too many cells die off, you've got problems. As a result, the shorter your telomeres, the higher your risk of just about all the conditions of aging: heart problems, dementia, cancer, and even death itself.
The link is so strong that telomere research is at the cutting edge of mainstream medicine, with scientists desperately looking for tricks that can stop the shrink and extend the life of the cell.
When those cells live longer, you could live longer too.
The study finds that ashwagandha root extract can enhance an enzyme called telomerase, which acts as a speed governor on telomere shrink.
The more telomerase activity you have, the slower the telomere shrink.
In the new study, ashwagandha root extract boosted telomerase activity by a stunning 45 percent.
This was a lab study, not research on humans.
But ashwagandha is pretty powerful stuff -- so much so that I already recommend it to my own patients for any number of reasons as it can fight stress, protect your adrenal glands, improve energy, boost testosterone in men, and even help you to lose weight.
If it can protect telomeres, too, that's just the icing on the cake!
If you want to know more about your own telomeres, I can run a test to check on them here at the Stengler Center for Integrative Medicine.
