WATCH OUT: Ugly new push to drug millions of older Americans
Antidepressants are treated like magic beans that can cure just about anything.
They're given for pain... sleep... hives... migraines... sexual dysfunction... and more.
Some docs even prescribe the drugs for pee problems!
But they're not magic beans.
There's little to no evidence that these drugs work for ANY of those conditions. Heck, they don't even work very well for depression.
We should be moving to get more people OFF of these badly overused meds.
Instead, a new study claims that they should be given to MILLIONS of new patients!
The study finds that two-thirds of the 16 million Americans diagnosed with major depression every year don't get treated.
Many of the folks who reject the meds are older, and patients over the age of 60 are half as likely to get treated as those middle-aged and younger.
I'd say that makes the older patients smart, but the mainstream says that it's time to find these people and get them "treated" -- which, of course, means meds.
Overall, among patients who are "treated," 4 in 5 get meds over psychotherapy. That's about 80 percent.
In older folks, "treatment" means "drugs" a whopping 90 percent of the time.
Now, obviously, anyone suffering from depression should seek help and get treated. There's no disputing that.
But those drugs can be worse than the depression itself!
Antidepressants can cause everything from personality changes to weight gain. Some have even been linked to heart risk.
All of these side effects are bad at any age, but they can be even worse for older adults, especially those who may already be dealing with some other health struggles.
There's a better way.
When depression has no obvious cause, such as the loss of a spouse or loved one, the answer isn't in a drug.
It's likely already in your body.
Many inexplicable mood changes in older people are caused by plunging hormone levels, often (but not always) testosterone in men and estrogen in women. Testing and treatment in the care of a holistic doctor can restore balance and have you feeling like yourself in no time.
When you need a little help getting over one of life's challenges, the answer still isn't in drugs.
The support of family and loved ones -- as well as natural herbal and homeopathic remedies -- can work better than meds and without the risk.
Some people also turn to the counseling mentioned in the new study. It can be effective, but don't forget the greatest counselor of all isn't a shrink.
God is always ready to lend an ear, provide comfort, and give you the strength you need to overcome anything... and his "clinic" is open 24 hours a day.
