Women need testosterone, too
"Doctor, are you sure you've got the right patient?"
I get that a lot when I talk about testosterone in women -- especially when I have to break the news that their levels are low, which is often the case in older women.
The problem isn't just that they can't believe they might be deficient in testosterone. It's that many women don't believe they need the "male" hormone at all.
But ladies, you do need it. It might be the "male" hormone, but it's absolutely essential to healthy aging in women -- and new research confirms that testosterone in women can help protect your brain, improve your memory and maybe even help keep dementia at bay.
The study of nearly 100 healthy post-menopausal women given either a real hormone gel or a placebo gel finds that six months of daily hormone treatments can improve your memory in two key ways.
First, it can improve your verbal learning, or the ability to remember what you hear.
And second, it can give you a lift in your all-important short-term memory.
By protecting the memory, testosterone in women might also protect against cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer's disease -- a disease that's more likely to strike women than men in the first place.
Women are also more likely to suffer faster and steeper declines when dementia does strike -- but as the new study shows, testosterone could help level the playing field.
And that's not the only reason women need the "male" hormone.
It's not even the most important reason, because testosterone is essential to heart function, and low levels can increase your risk of heart attack.
And if you're past menopause, odds are your levels are low.
That's because -- like estrogen -- testosterone in women is created in the ovaries. And -- again, like estrogen -- the ovaries stop producing it in helpful amounts after menopause.
Supplements can help restore that balance and give your body what it needs. Of course, women need much less than men, but that little boost can make a huge difference in your overall health and wellbeing.
