Women face big painkiller risks
A battle with chronic pain is tough enough -- but it's nothing next to what many people face next.
That's a battle with addiction and prescription drug abuse.
Millions of Americans are quietly addicted to painkillers -- and too many are losing, especially women. Since 1999, the number of women killed by prescription drug abuse has quadrupled, compared to an increase of 265 percent in men, according to new numbers from the CDC.
It's so bad that more women are killed now by prescription drug overdoses than die in traffic accidents.
The biggest culprits are those painkillers I just mentioned, especially narcotic painkillers such as Oxycontin and Vicodin. Narcotics now kill four times as many women each year as cocaine and heroin combined.
And believe it or not, that's not even the most shocking number I have for you today.
In 2010 alone, nearly 1 million women were seen in emergency rooms for prescription drug abuse and overdoses -- and more than 200,000 of those ER trips were because of prescription painkillers.
That's just unacceptable. It's unacceptable in men, and it's unacceptable in women -- because most people given these dangerous and addictive drugs never needed them in the first place.
There are much better solutions for pain -- starting with finding and correcting the actual cause.
Drugs can't do that... but a holistic physician experienced in pain relief can.
Your own solution will depend on the cause of your pain, but in many cases, even chronic problems such as back pain, migraines, arthritis and more can be corrected naturally.
And while you work on that total solution with your doctor, there are much safer temporary measures that can bring relief -- including acupuncture, cold laser and natural anti-inflammatory supplements such as turmeric and fish oil.
If your own doctor is offering you prescriptions instead of solutions, maybe it's time to see someone else and work on a new approach.
And if you're in Southern California, I offer many of the pain solutions I just mentioned here in my clinic outside San Diego -- not to mention nearly two decades' experience in holistic pain relief.
